CLOSED SCHOOLS
In 2013, the Chicago Board of Education permanently closed fifty public schools, the largest single round of school closings in recent American history. Nearly 12,000 students were displaced, mostly on the city’s South and West Sides. I visited all of the closed school buildings that summer, for a documentary photo project. The photos appeared on WBEZ’s website, were featured in the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, and were exhibited in a solo show at the IPaintMyMind Gallery in Logan Square. The photos were also used as part of two documentary series from Kartemquin Films: The School Project, and ’63 Boycott.
