25 YEARS OF WBEZ
Chicago Public Media was originally conceived of as the radio arm of the Chicago Board of Education. But in 1990 they severed ties and the station went independent. To celebrate 25 years of independence, I helped WBEZ create a website highlighting a few big moments from the station’s history: Dave Isay’s landmark documentary “Ghetto Life 101” with LeAlan Jones and Lloyd Newman, a rare two-hour interview with Mike Royko late in his career, Ira Glass discussing the origins of This American Life, and WBEZ’s live coverage of Harold Washington’s 1983 election as mayor of Chicago.
