CLOSED SCHOOLS2013
In 2013, the Chicago Board of Education permanently closed 50 public schools, the largest single round of school closings in recent American history. Nearly 12,000 students were displaced, mostly on the city’s South and West Sides. I visited all of the closed school buildings for a documentary photo project. The photos appeared on WBEZ, were featured in the Washington Post, Chicago Sun-Times, were exhibited in a solo show at the IPaintMyMind Gallery, and used as part of two documentaries from Kartemquin Films.

HARPER HIGH SCHOOL201216-year-old Shakaki Asphy was one of 27 students from Harper High School shot in a single year. At her funeral, Harper Principal Leonetta Sanders talked about what went through her head when she heard this young woman’s life had been cut short. Several months later, This American Life sent Alex Kotlowitz, Ben Calhoun, and Linda Lutton to spend several months at Harper High School in Englewood. This American Life devoted two episodes to the school, examining how students and staff are impacted daily by gun violence. I photographed Harper for This American Life.

HOMELESS LGBT YOUTH2012In 2012 I reported for four months on homeless and marginalized gay and transgender young people with Erica Demarest and Kate Sosin. The eight-week series ran in Chicago’s largest gay newspaper, The Windy City Times, under the direction of Tracy Baim, and won a Peter Lisagor Award from the Chicago Headline Club for Feature Writing. It was also nominated for an award for Outstanding Newspaper Series from the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
